"Red Star Over China" Stage Version

Dashan as Edgar Snow

Dashan played the lead role in a 2-hour stage drama based on the landmark book "Red Star over China" by American journalist Edgar Snow. This major production, featuring a cast of over 60 people, was held by the Shanghai Dramatic Arts Center.

Originally scheduled for 8 performances in June and July, 2006, at the 1300-seat Majestic Theater in Shanghai, the play was quickly sold out and extended for a 9th show. Dashan's first foray into stage drama was also well received.

In April, 2007, "Red Star Over China" was selected as one of two plays from Shanghai chosen to participate in a national festival in Beijing marking "100 Years of Chinese Drama".

Edgar Snow was one of the most prominent American journalists based in China in the 1930s. He is best known for "Red Star Over China", first published in 1937 and still widely available today, both in China and the West. "Red Star Over China" was the the first independant account of what was going on in the Communist-controlled areas of China and who the main personalities were. Its publication had a tremendous impact on both Western and Chinese readers in the years before World War II.

Reviews

After performing xiangsheng, in TV dramas and as program host,
Dashan once again surprises and impresses us with this latest foray.

CCTV, April 4, 2007

Dashan, this modern-day Snow, performed his role in an exemplary fashion.
People's Daily, July 4, 2006

It's hard to imagine that this "fresh talent", performing with such energy and style,
was appearing in his first stage production. Surrounded by top-rank, senior
performers, Dashan never looked the least bit out of place.
